Six fighters stepped inside the cage at the Ax Fighting championships Saturday to test their skills against some very game opponents.
Stephen Wallace took a last minute kickboxing fight and faced a very strong competitor. Stephen was able to use good combinations and effective return kicks to take the unanimous decision after three rounds of non-stop action.
Jorge Cota stepped into the cage for his second time and faced a taller opponent. Jorge was able to land some good body shots throughout the 3 round fight but seemed to injure his foot early in the match. Jorge's opponent had excellent combinations and footwork and earned the decision win. We are proud of Jorge's warrior spirit and hope he heals up soon.
Jorge Garcia had one of the most technical kickboxing rounds of the entire night. Jorge and his Canadian opponent exchanged mind-blowing combos for the opening round and the entire crowd roared in approval. Jorge got hit with a good shot in the second round and was never able to recover and the referee stopped the fight after a second knockdown in the second round.
Brad Spencer faced his doppleganger from Ireland and used some good counter grappling to take down his opponent and avoid getting submitted from his opponent's guard in the beginning of the fight. As the fight progressed, Brad landed a good punch that dropped his opponent to the canvas and as Brad went in for the finish, his opponent landed a armbar submission to steal the victory.
Miranda Granger used effective kicks and aggressiveness to earn her 3rd kickboxing victory of the year. The fight was a crowd pleaser that left both girls respectful of each other's skill and power.
Becky Mertzig was the main event of the evening and was fighting for the 155 MMA AXFC title. In what turned out to be a 5 round standup war, Becky was able to landed some good power shots, but her opponent used good counter punching, takedown defense and a takedown to snatch the judges decision.
We are super proud of all six of these fighters for stepping up and challenging themselves. They represented themselves and the gym well in both victory and defeat. The video of the fights should be out soon.
